24-year-old woman set her friend on fire for making a sexist comment: report

An Australian woman allegedly set fire to her friend after making inappropriate comments during a party, according to court proceedings earlier this month.

Kobe Jean Walpole, 24, pled guilty to an arson incident involving 23-year-old Jake Lauder. The court was informed that Lauder felt “overwhelmed” by her aggressive behavior throughout the night before the incident occurred at a house party in New South Wales last year.

Lauder reportedly told Walpole that she should “stick to the scones” if she couldn’t handle drinking with the boys, which, as court discussions revealed, infuriated her. She then went to the garage, grabbed a gallon of gasoline, and doused Lauder with it.

As he provoked her further, calling out to continue, Walpole admitted to being intoxicated and having used cocaine. She then lit a lighter and set Lauder on fire, as per testimonies.

Lauder sustained burns to 55% of his body, which damaged some of his sweat glands. A victim impact statement shared in court outlined how he was put into a medically induced coma for eight days following the incident. He underwent 10 surgeries and spent about 74 days in the burn unit at a Melbourne hospital.

The statement further revealed that due to significant skin damage, Lauder is unable to expose his skin to sunlight.

Walpole mentioned in court that her struggles with drugs and alcohol intensified after a breakup in 2022, expressing deep remorse for her actions.

During the trial, she claimed that Lauder had been persistently hostile and recounted an instance where he had pushed her while they were arguing, as noted by the Australian broadcaster.

“I feel scared, regretful, and guilty—not just toward Jake but also his family, his loved ones, and everyone affected by this situation,” Walpole stated.

She expressed disbelief, saying, “It’s very hard to comprehend that the injury caused is from what I did.”

Walpole pleaded guilty to one count of causing harm with a corrosive liquid. She is expected to return to court this month for sentencing.
