Recent Legal Setback for Tesla over Autopilot Crash
In a significant ruling, a judge has mandated Tesla to pay $243 million in damages related to a fatal incident from 2019 involving the company’s autopilot driver assistance system. This decision finds Tesla partially liable for the crash that resulted in the death of Nybel Benavides Leon and serious injuries to her boyfriend, both of whom were near a parked SUV at the time.
The case, known as Benavides v. Tesla, revealed that the driver admitted to being at fault, as he was distractedly searching for his phone and ended up colliding with a stop sign. Yet, the judge still attributed a third of the blame to Tesla, claiming the issues stemmed from how the company marketed and designed the autopilot feature, which encouraged irresponsible driving behavior.
As part of the ruling, Tesla is required to pay around $43 million in compensatory damages and an additional $200 million in punitive damages. CEO Elon Musk has indicated that the company plans to contest the verdict, but this outcome raises serious questions about Tesla’s marketing of its autopilot and “fully autonomous” technologies.

Furthermore, she pointed out Tesla’s lack of geofencing, a safety measure many other automakers utilize. When asked about Tesla’s decision regarding geofencing back in 2019, Cummings suggested it might have been motivated by sales objectives.

The Miami crash involved innocent individuals who were not utilizing Tesla’s autopilot but still endured tragic consequences.
