Deportation of Cruise Ship Employees Linked to Child Exploitation

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) made an announcement on Monday regarding the deportation of 27 cruise ship employees suspected of involvement in child pornography activities.

According to CBP, between April 23 and April 27, agents boarded eight cruise ships docked in San Diego as part of an investigation into child sexual exploitation material (CSEM).

The agency detained a total of 28 employees, finding that 27 were involved in actions like receiving, possessing, or distributing child pornography. As a result, their visas were revoked, with most of those affected being Filipino nationals.

Notably, at least 10 of the detained employees were affiliated with Disney Cruise Line. A spokesperson for Disney stated that the company maintains a strict “zero-tolerance policy” on such matters and is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation. They mentioned that most employees impacted were not from their cruise line, but those who were have since been let go.

In a similar vein, Holland America Line confirmed that some of its employees were also part of the investigation, expressing concern over the allegations. They reported that the employee involved had been terminated.

Despite the serious nature of the findings, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California noted there are currently no pending charges against any individuals involved in the case.

According to a source familiar with CBP operations, the process for deportation is less stringent than that of pursuing criminal charges. Visa revocation can occur based on new information that surfaces after the issuance of a visa, allowing CBP to act quickly if they discover any issues.

CBP retains the authority to revoke visas at any time if new findings warrant such actions.
