$3.4M settlement for class action on out-of-network services from UnitedHealthcare

$3.4 Million UnitedHealthcare Class Action Settlement for Out-of-Network Services

UnitedHealthcare has struck a settlement agreement with the North Carolina Department of Insurance (NCDOI) to address claims that it underpaid for out-of-network medical services. This agreement specifically covers members who utilized out-of-network services from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2021, and found themselves facing higher out-of-pocket costs than anticipated.

Following consumer complaints, the NCDOI launched an investigation, which revealed that UnitedHealthcare had often paid less than the billed amounts from out-of-network providers. Since, some members ended up compensating the providers for the difference between what was billed and what UnitedHealthcare covered.

While UnitedHealthcare denies any wrongdoing, it has agreed to pay $3.4 million to rectify the situation. This settlement allows eligible members to reclaim amounts they paid out-of-pocket, including coinsurance or any deductible costs incurred for services not covered under UnitedHealthcare’s network during the specified period. Interestingly, these repayments will come with added interest.

Claims must be validated through a claim form submitted by November 4, 2025. Members who haven’t received a notice but think they might qualify are encouraged to reach out to the settlement administrator for confirmation.

Details on Eligibility and Claims

Eligible members are those who received medical services from out-of-network providers during the stated timeframe. If you believe you qualify, it’s suggested to check with the settlement administrator regarding your eligibility.

Potential Refunds

If you’re eligible, you could get back money for out-of-pocket expenses, including coinsurance or deductibles related to out-of-network visits. Just remember to keep your proof of purchase handy when making your claim.

Claim Submission Information

To claim your benefits, you’ll need to fill out a valid claim form and submit it by the deadline. Keep in mind that submitting false claims can have serious repercussions.

The case, known as UnitedHealthcare Issues with North Carolina Inc., highlights the ongoing challenges and complexities of navigating insurance reimbursements, particularly for out-of-network services. As always, stay informed and ensure you follow all required procedures if you think you’re entitled to a refund.
