Fall Is Here: College Football Kicks Off

With Labor Day behind us, it’s clear that fall has arrived. The group chats are buzzing with pictures of kids heading off to their first day of school, and college football is finally back in action.

While some teams may be ready to graduate, others seem like they could use a bit more practice—perhaps a week or two of summer school.

The opening week of the 2025 college football season revealed a mix of performances, with three teams standing out positively and three others not quite meeting expectations.

Billed as a must-see matchup, Texas faced off against Ohio State in a highly anticipated game. Texas, sporting a top national ranking, brought its new starting quarterback into the fray.

Yet, despite the hype, Ohio State emerged victorious in a close battle, winning 14-7 and leaving Texas with a lot to reflect on after this defeat.

It wasn’t a flawless game, but the Buckeyes showed off an impressive defensive strategy, managing to contain strong offenses, even after losing eight starters from last year’s championship team.

Meanwhile, Texas has a bit of work to do following their first-week loss. On a positive note, their defense held Ohio State to just 203 yards and one touchdown, which, in many cases, could be enough to secure a win. There’s something there for Texas to build on, especially with what Manning displayed in the fourth quarter. He seemed to be finding his footing, making fewer hasty decisions, even in the wake of the tough loss.

However, they really need to get their offense sorted out before hitting a rough patch in early October, with challenging games against Florida and a classic rivalry match against Oklahoma.

On another note, Miami has received some well-deserved recognition after beating Notre Dame, marking their first win against a top-10 team since 2017. Freshman quarterback Cam Ward took the lead, throwing a crucial touchdown, and Marachi Tony is shaping up to be a future standout wide receiver.

Things are looking promising for Miami, but they’ll face a significant test against Florida later this month.

In his first season as a college head coach, Bill Belichick experienced something he never faced during his time in the NFL: a loss by a wide margin, as the Tar Heels were defeated 48-14 by TCU.

Though Belichick has managed his fair share of tough losses, UNC fans might find some comfort in his past experiences. After all, he’s far from Foxborough now and without the comforts of coaching alongside legends like Tom Brady.

The game highlighted weaknesses in the trenches for the Tar Heels, and it’s clear that Belichick has work to do—and quickly.

The LSU Tigers took center stage against Clemson, with the match kicking off dramatically. They scored 14 unanswered points in the second half, securing a 17-10 victory.

That result underscores LSU’s capabilities, although they had a couple of fumbles that put them in tight spots, one leading to a field goal for Clemson. Despite these issues, the defense and quarterback Garrett Nussmeier are pushing for consistent wins.

And about Alabama? Well, they were certainly on the offensive against Florida State, but a review of the game tape reveals troubling patterns, particularly in their defensive plays.

Teams like Florida State and even Vanderbilt in previous seasons have managed to overpower Alabama, and that’s definitely a trend raising concern among Crimson Tide fans.
