30,000 runners honor a fallen hero by following their route in the NYC Tunnel to Towers race, raising millions.

On Sunday, thousands of runners participated in a poignant event to honor New York City firefighters who lost their lives during the 9/11 attacks. The Tunnel to Towers Foundation organized a 5K Run & Walk that saw 30,000 participants retracing the steps of Stephen Siller, a fallen FDNY hero who dashed through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to reach the World Trade Center on that fateful day in 2001.

The event not only pays tribute to those lost but also supports initiatives aimed at providing homes for families of first responders with young children and creating “smart homes” for injured veterans. Over the years, the foundation has also helped numerous families by paying off their mortgages after they lost loved ones in the line of duty.

As Schiller noted, “This event is the cornerstone of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.” It serves as a heartfelt remembrance of his brother Stephen and a commitment to never forget those lost, even as we mark 24 years since the tragedy.

Participants came from various locations, including France and the UK, highlighting the event’s global appeal. The presence of West Point cadets in black uniforms further added to the day’s significance, making it a solemn and unifying occasion.

Though fundraising efforts are still ongoing, the foundation has already raised more than $2.4 million through individual and corporate contributions. Keegan Muldany, a police officer from Potsdam, New York, set a remarkable record this year by raising $135,000 in honor of his cousin, Richie “Moondog” Muldany, a firefighter who died in the September 11 attacks.

Reflecting on the mission of the Schiller family, Muldany expressed, “The work they do for families of injured veterans and fallen heroes sends a strong message. Everyone we talk to wants to help.” He emphasized that the fundraiser feels authentic, with participants contributing willingly without any pressure.

The Muldowney family, who have been fundraising for the foundation since its inception, are increasing their outreach efforts by hosting events year-round in places like Florida and Long Island. Interestingly, they’ve increased their fundraising goal significantly this year, which speaks to their commitment to the cause.

Muldowney emphasized the importance of educating future generations about the sacrifices made. “The true meaning of the Stiller family’s mission is to ‘never forget’, and we need to ensure that the next generation understands the significance of these sacrifices,” he said.
