A group of border collies, found in horrid conditions, have been rescued and are now receiving care at an animal shelter in Florida. Witnesses reported that the dogs are beginning to show signs of happiness and recovery.
“It’s like a weight has been lifted off our shoulders. We can see the joy and healing in them,” the Treasure Coast Humane Society noted in a Facebook post, alongside pictures of the freshly groomed dogs.
On August 10, 2026, authorities discovered 36 dogs living in squalor at the home of Paige O’Donnell, 62, during a raid prompted by complaints from neighbors about possible animal hoarding in Palm City. Following the investigation, O’Donnell was charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty.
Detectives placed O’Donnell under surveillance due to numerous alerts from the community, raising concerns that there might still be animal remains on the premises.
The sheriff’s office reported that the living conditions inside the home were extremely poor, so much so that deputies had to don protective gear when they entered. Feces and urine littered the area, complicating the rescue efforts.
Sheriff John Budensiek commented that when officers arrived, they encountered “feces throughout every square inch of the house.”
Amid the grim situation, the rescued dogs were found in deplorable condition. “They were barely recognizable,” Budensiek remarked, highlighting the extent of their neglect. One dog, in particular, appeared beautiful yet lacked proper grooming, which could be quite distressing to see.
The shelter staff expressed pride in the dogs’ resilience and have been delighted to observe them rediscovering their playful nature. The conditions of O’Donnell’s home were described as severely dilapidated, with extensive damage and minimal care provided to the animals.
