One person was killed and two others injured in a stabbing that occurred in broad daylight on an East Village sidewalk Sunday evening, police said.
According to police, around 5:45 p.m. near A Avenue and East 14th Street in Manhattan, a 38-year-old man was stabbed in the neck and killed, a 52-year-old woman was stabbed in the leg and a 31-year-old man was stabbed in the lower back.
All three victims were initially rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where the 38-year-old victim died from his injuries, authorities said.
The woman is in critical condition, while the young man is in stable condition.
Police said a 30-year-old man was detained at the scene, but no charges have been filed against him at this time.
According to the NYPD, “cutting instruments” were also recovered.
After the three stabbings, trash, clothes and other items were strewn across the sidewalk and pools of blood were scattered across the street.
In the wake of the deadly attack, City Councilman Keith Powers called for a dedicated police presence in the area to curb the spate of violence and other crime, which he described as “out of control” and “madness.”
“The situation on 14th Street is out of control…it is unacceptable to allow the situation on the street to remain as it is,” he said in a statement.
“We need all elected officials and agencies to work to solve these problems: a dedicated NYPD presence to curb illegal activity, continued crackdowns on illegal vendors; [sic] “People also need to be mindful of things like trash and sanitation cleaning,” Powers added.
Details about a motive for the stabbings were not immediately released by police, and it was unclear whether there was any connection between the victims.
