4-year-old found dead, sister found alive after mother ‘brutally murdered’ in Louisiana

Authorities in Louisiana have called off the search for two girls who were kidnapped following the murder of their mother after police discovered the body of the 4-year-old girl and her sister alive, authorities announced at a press conference.

Carrie Brunette, 35, had been missing since Tuesday but was found “brutally murdered” in her bedroom early Thursday morning, according to the Tanjipahoa County Sheriff’s Office.

Her two young daughters, Jaylee, 6, and Erin, 4, are “missing,” Sheriff Daniel Edwards said at a news conference Thursday morning.

Hours later, authorities made the horrific discovery, reporting that the body of 4-year-old Erin Brunette had been found.

“It’s just a terrible, tragic situation. As a police chief and as a father, I hate to see a baby on the ground losing its life. This is an innocent 4-year-old child,” Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said at a news conference.

Police added that Jaylee was found alive and that a suspect, identified as Daniel Callihan, was arrested in Jackson, Mississippi, WVUE first reported.

Police say Erin’s body was found in a wooded area just yards from where her sister was found alive.

Jaylee was found in a car driven by Callihan.

She was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

“Cowards took this child from her family,” Wade said.

The Mississippi State Bureau of Investigation and Jackson Police are assisting in the investigation.

Louisiana State Police issued an Amber Alert on behalf of the sheriff’s office early Thursday morning for the girls, who were last seen around 8 a.m. Thursday at a home in Loranger.

Police say a domestic violence incident spun out of control, leading to Brunette’s murder and the abduction of the girls.
