Pepe the Gator’s Unexpected Encounter
A rather unusual case of justice unfolded recently involving a 10-foot crocodile named Pepe. Officers in North Carolina apprehended him while he was basking on a busy road. Locals humorously dubbed his situation “prosecution” for allegedly being a “dinosaur.” It seems, well, the humor didn’t end there.
The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office mentioned that witnesses saw Pepe just relaxing on the road, but perhaps they didn’t appreciate the potential danger he posed. “Pepe has been cited for being a dinosaur without proper documentation, public lounging with intent to tan, and for blocking traffic,” the office noted in a playful press release. The officials had quite the lighthearted approach to a serious situation.
On a call made on May 25th, wildlife responders managed to safely retrieve Pepe. But before they did, officers snapped a picture with him, comparing the hefty crocodile to a rodeo challenge. “He was about 10 feet long and weighed around 400 pounds. Truly a monster,” remarked a spokesperson from the Sheriff’s Office.
Interestingly, three grown men were still only partially able to cover Pepe despite their best efforts. “Ten feet is quite a sight—like a basketball hoop,” Dannel shared, trying to convey the gator’s massive size. Notably, while 10 feet is impressive, it’s still dwarfed by the largest gator on record, which measures over 14 feet.
To safely transport Pepe, deputies covered his eyes with towels—eye contact can trigger a dangerous response in these animals—and used electrical tape to keep his mouth shut. “They may not have had the easiest time during the capture, but he was in good shape afterward,” Dannel noted. It’s a bit amusing, considering the circumstances.
There was some backlash online, with certain folks suggesting the officers should have just left Pepe alone. Dannel pointed out, though, that letting a gator linger near a busy road was risky for everyone involved. “Kids running around could inadvertently cross paths with him, and accidents could happen,” he explained.
He expressed curiosity over how Pepe handled the ordeal, wishing to see body camera footage from the agents present. Some officers seemed a bit nervous about dealing with him, with reports reflecting mixed feelings about being so close to the crocodile.
In the end, all charges were dropped against Pepe after he was safely taken back to his natural habitat. “He’ll carry on with his usual routine—soaking in the sun, hunting, and possibly seeking out a mate,” Dannel quipped. Still, he wondered where Pepe had come from and pondered how far the gator had wandered to find his sunny spot.
“Who knows how far he traveled. It’s likely been a few miles,” Dannel mused, curious about Pepe’s journey and hoping they wouldn’t have to revisit the situation any time soon.
