A USA Today/Suffolk University poll conducted Monday found that 41% of Democrats want President Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race, while just 51% want him to remain in the race.
The poll will be one of the first post-debate polls that Democratic activists and donors will be looking at to gauge how much damage Biden’s candidacy may have been caused by his debate performance.
The poll found former President Donald Trump won by a margin of 5 to 1. Only 28% of Biden supporters said he won.
Only 24% of Democrats said the debate made them more supportive of Biden, and 9% said it made them want to support a third-party candidate.
Meanwhile, 64% of independents want to vote Biden out.

When asked about the impact of the debate, 26% of independents said they were more likely to support Trump, 9% supported Biden and 17% said they were more likely to vote for a third-party candidate.
USA Today reported on how voters expressed concerns about Biden’s debate performance.
Those concerned about Biden used words like “confused” and “incoherent.” An overwhelming majority said Trump won.
Others cited words like “coherent/articulate” and “aware/current” as reasons for supporting the 78-year-old former president.
Among those who said Biden won, the main reasons focused on Biden’s character rather than his performance, saying Biden was “genuine/honest” and that Trump “lied” in his responses.
poll sampling The poll, conducted among 1,000 registered voters from Friday through Sunday, had a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.
“There’s no question that this debate sent shock waves throughout the political world,” David Palaiologos, director of the Suffolk Center for Political Research, said of the poll.
“Democrats at the polls are giving President Biden some tough love: ‘You’ve served us well, but look through our eyes at who you were last Thursday night. It’s time to hold your head up high and go,'” he added.
Nate Silver’s election model projected Trump to have a 6-point lead over Biden in his chances of winning the popular vote in November after the first presidential debate on June 30. The last Republican to win the popular vote was George W. Bush in 2004, with 50.73 percent.
