A college football player who had to cut his career short due to an injury during his freshman year is making a surprising comeback at the age of 47.
Justin Buzzard, a pastor from South Bay, recently tried out for the San Jose City College Jaguars football team while he was attending Garden City Church.
The idea struck him after his son shared a video on social media of a man in his 60s playing soccer. Buzzard had played football consistently from high school through his first college year.
“I just thought to myself, maybe I could give it another shot,” he remarked, reflecting on his renewed aspirations.
He reached out to his college coach, who surprisingly welcomed the conversation. Now, he’s back on the field as a defensive end—his previous position—complete with his own locker and gear.
Jim Winkler, head coach of the Jaguars, shared that his first message to Buzzard was clear: “These are the standards, these are the rules we live by, and as long as you can abide by them, we’ll give you a chance.”
Winkler believes that having Buzzard on the team brings real advantages.
“He’s on the other side now,” Winkler added, referring to Buzzard’s journey and emphasizing the importance of pursuing one’s dreams without regrets.
However, re-entering the game at this age comes with its own challenges, especially regarding physical health. Buzzard mentioned feeling bruised and sore from the practices.
“I’m surprisingly feeling better physically than I anticipated,” he noted. “Of course, there are risks, but I think I’m managing quite well.”
In the end, Buzzard expressed gratitude for the experience, saying he truly enjoys being part of the team.
“There’s a strong sense of brotherhood and family here,” he shared. Interestingly, his younger teammates—who are about the same age as his father—have nicknamed him “OG.”
He is looking forward to playing in his first game on August 29 at San Jose City College.
