49ers’ Brock Purdy watched Tom Brady’s playoff greatness to learn ahead of Super Bowl LVIII: report

This is the story of two quarterbacks in this year’s Super Bowl.

On the Kansas City Chiefs side, it’s not uncommon to see Patrick Mahomes on the field for the final game of the season, as they prepare for their fourth Super Bowl appearance in the past five seasons.

Meanwhile, San Francisco 49ers signal caller Brock Purdy, aka “Mr. Irrevant” in the 2022 NFL Draft, will appear in the Super Bowl for the first time in his young career as the team’s franchise quarterback.

The pressure on Purdy to perform in Las Vegas is clearly on an order of magnitude, meaning he has had to prepare in every possible way over the past two weeks.

One of the ways he did that was by watching playoff games and Super Bowls featuring perhaps the greatest player of all time, Tom Brady.

Super Bowl LVIII: What you need to know about the game

CBS Sports’ Evan Washburn reported that Purdy’s desire for perfection was “eating away at him” until he started watching Brady. The New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback is considered one of the best quarterbacks ever to play the position, but despite winning multiple Super Bowls, Purdy has never been a player. I knew it wasn’t perfect.

The nickname “Superhero” wasn’t what Brady wanted throughout his seven Super Bowl championships, but Purdy realized it was an important part of it.

Performing when the offense really needs it is a Brady trait, and Purdy will be focused on doing just that in the biggest game of his career.

Two weeks ago against the Detroit Lions, Purdy made several key plays in the upset that led to a 34-31 victory. He made a number of clutch throws and grabbed a crucial third down with his feet in the second half to clinch the come-from-behind victory.

The Chiefs certainly have an element of experience in this contest, as we’ve seen with multiple teams over the years, and that helps a lot.

But if there’s anyone to learn from in order to win the Vince Lombardi Trophy, it’s the man who won the most Super Bowl rings in his career. Purdy expects to see some Brady magic on Sunday night.
