SANTA CLARA – Tensions at Practice
During a joint practice between the 49ers and Titans on Tuesday, chaos erupted around Christian McCaffrey, who remained on the sidelines, absorbed in the offensive playsheet as he observed the unfolding drama.
Considered one of the premier running backs in the league, McCaffrey missed yet another practice due to what the team described as a “tense” situation.
While the exact source of McCaffrey’s discomfort hasn’t been pinpointed—could it be his limbs, muscles, or tendons?—I can’t help but speculate if it might have something to do with his calves, especially if he’s trying to save up on treatment costs.
It’s understandable if that thought sends chills down the spines of 49ers fans.
After all, a calf strain he experienced during training camp two years ago spiraled into a significant problem, ultimately sidelining him for much of that season.
Initially perceived as a minor concern, it progressed to Achilles issues, leading McCaffrey to miss the first eight games of the season. When he finally returned, he played only four games before suffering yet another injury.
So how did that season end for the 49ers? Not great, to say the least.
Coming off a Super Bowl appearance, they ended up with a disappointing 6-11 record. If you think McCaffrey’s absence didn’t contribute to that decline, well, you’d be mistaken.
Last season, he was a crucial part of their Super Bowl run, leading with 1,459 rushing yards and contributing significantly to their offensive stats.
This year, without him, the 49ers have looked subpar.
That’s why McCaffrey’s two-day absence raises eyebrows.
But no need to panic just yet.
Coach Kyle Shanahan downplayed the severity of the situation, indicating that it was more about precaution than a serious injury. He mentioned his concerns were more about preventing McCaffrey from aggravating a minor issue into something more severe, which could lead to a more extended absence.
This makes a lot of sense. There’s no reason to risk McCaffrey’s health in August, especially with the regular season approaching.
“Christian is the guy we need to be ready for Week 1,” Shanahan emphasized. “So while we’re confident in his progress, we just want to be cautious.”
That approach is entirely reasonable, though it does stir some unease given the history.
The 49ers have faced these situations with McCaffrey before. They were once assured everything would turn out fine, but it didn’t.
Sure, he could be back in a few days and this could all be a distant memory by Week 1.
However, considering the past, it’s understandable that fans remain anxious until McCaffrey returns to practice.
Adding to the concern is that McCaffrey isn’t the only star dealing with potential issues.
Nick Bosa, who was limited to just three games last year due to a knee injury, has missed practice for the fifth time in a row as this situation plays out. Coach Shanahan has also eased concerns about Bosa, explaining it’s simply tendonitis, a common issue after an ACL recovery.
That seems like a safe assessment, but there is a pattern emerging.
In addition, there are other players dealing with injuries, such as Michael Williams, who started on the PUP list, and tight end George Kittle, who is rehabilitating an Achilles injury from January. To make matters worse, wide receiver Ricky Pearsall is already out for the season due to a knee injury.
Altogether, the 49ers are managing injuries or discomfort in twenty players.
Twenty. That’s quite a toll.
As the season looms ahead, cautious concerns are evolving into something a bit more serious. The team entered this season hoping to overcome their health struggles from the previous year, yet here they are, facing down another round of injuries before their first preseason game.
With Bosa, Kittle, Williams, Pearsall, and now McCaffrey in the mix, it’s quite alarming.
Perhaps this is just the noise of August. Maybe Shanahan is making the smart decision to keep his veteran players protected until the regular season starts.
It’s very likely that everything will turn out alright.
But with the history in mind, no one should dismiss seeing McCaffrey sidelined during practice.
They’ve witnessed this narrative before.
And when that initial “tightness” was mentioned, it didn’t end well.
No, now is not the time to panic; rather, it’s about being cautious.
McCaffrey’s absence could have major implications for the season, even as the team battles with other injuries.
Currently, Shanahan and the organization are treating this situation lightly, but it could significantly impact their season if it persists.
