49ers’ Strong Start Marred by Sideline Tensions

The San Francisco 49ers are making waves at the start of the 2026 season, boasting a flawless 6-0 record following a recent win against the Washington Commanders on “Monday Night Football.”

However, even in their success, tensions can bubble to the surface. Just ask head coach Kyle Shanahan and quarterback Brock Purdy, who found themselves in the spotlight after a fiery exchange during Week 6. Purdy was heard exclaiming, “Hey, Kyle!” in frustration, and the moment quickly circulated on social media. It seemed he was upset that Shanahan didn’t relay the play-call to him in time.

As the team prepares for their game against the Atlanta Falcons this week, Shanahan reflected on the incident, providing a slightly different perspective. “It’s actually not to call a play faster,” he explained. “It’s, ‘I need it again,’ and it gets cutoff at 15 [seconds].” The communication between a quarterback’s helmet and the sideline can sometimes experience hiccups, which might have contributed to the misunderstanding in this case.

“Sometimes no one can hear it,” he added. “I always call a play and I just walk, and think. I don’t always watch the huddle. A lot of times, players will say, ‘We didn’t get it, it was chopped’ or someone shouts, ‘Brock’s yelling at you.’ But I did hear him a couple of times in this game.” Shanahan explained that he tries to act quickly as long as the time allows.

Shanahan is recognized as one of the elite offensive play-callers in football. Yet, it’s clear that smooth communication is crucial, especially during the frenetic pace of a game.

Fortunately for the 49ers, there seems to be no real disconnect between Shanahan and Purdy. The quarterback is enjoying a standout season, holding the league’s top quarterback rating of 118.1 with 1,460 yards passed, a 69.6% completion rate, 14 touchdowns, and just two interceptions.

With this momentum, Shanahan, Purdy, and the entire 49ers squad will aim to keep their winning streak alive as they head into Week 7 in Atlanta.
