San Francisco 49ers starting linebacker Dre Greenlaw suffered one of the most brutal injuries ever seen on a football field during Super Bowl V.
Greenlaw injured his Achilles tendon in the first half just trying to run onto the field from the 49ers’ sideline, the team announced. He had doubts about returning.
Greenlaw and other defensemen watched on the 49ers’ sideline as the punt returner was fumbled by the Chiefs’ Richie James Jr., but eventually recovered and was tackled.

Greenlaw was seen jumping up and down, excited at the possibility of a fumble recovery. But when he decided to run onto the field, he rolled onto the grass and immediately grabbed his left leg.
None of this was seen by the millions of people watching at home as the CBS broadcast showed the scene unfolding from the commercial.

And it didn’t look good for Greenlaw, and he immediately went to the blue medical tent for evaluation.
A cart came out to take him off the field to be tested in the locker room.

The fifth-year 49ers linebacker has been a key part of a stingy defense, recording 120 tackles, 1.5 sacks and four passes defensed in 15 games this season.
Greenlaw’s speed alongside Fred Warner in the middle of the defense helped keep the Chiefs’ offense at bay in the first half.
The 49ers will rely on Oren Burks to replace Greenlaw for the remainder of the game.

Greenlaw was selected in the fifth round by the 49ers in the 2019 NFL Draft.
