NFC Showdown: 49ers vs. Bears in Thrilling Matchup
If Week 17’s “Sunday Night Football” was any indication of the playoff intensity, fans surely got their money’s worth. The San Francisco 49ers took on the Chicago Bears in a highly competitive game, both vying for the NFC’s top seed.
In the end, the 49ers managed to clinch a nail-biting 42-38 victory, significantly boosting their chances at nabbing that coveted spot.
The night unfolded in a back-and-forth manner right from the first snap. Surprisingly, San Francisco didn’t start well. Jaylon Johnson intercepted a pass intended for Jauan Jennings, allowing TJ Edwards to return it 34 yards for a pick-six barely 15 seconds into the game. San Francisco was quickly down 7-0.
But Brock Purdy, the 49ers’ quarterback, didn’t let that shake his confidence. On the next drive, he led his team down the field with an efficient nine-play, 65-yard march, connecting with tight end Jake Tonges—who stepped in for the injured George Kittle—to even the score.
What followed was a mix of excitement and tension, as both teams traded punches. After a few punts, they combined for five consecutive touchdown drives. Purdy ran for a touchdown, while Christian McCaffrey dazzled with a 41-yard run. Meanwhile, Chicago’s rookie quarterback, Luther Baden III, caught a deep pass to equalize at 14-14.
McCaffrey found the end zone again early in the second quarter, but the Bears countered quickly. Chicago’s offense capitalized on a 49ers’ offsides penalty to find rookie tight end Colston Loveland for a 36-yard touchdown.
At halftime, the 49ers held the edge after Purdy orchestrated a 15-play drive that dwindled time and ended with a 3-yard rushing touchdown.
Both teams exchanged touchdowns in the third quarter, with Kyle Juszczyk putting points on the board for San Francisco and D’Andre Swift answering back for Chicago. After Swift’s second first-half touchdown, the Bears regained the lead earlier retaken from them.
The tension escalated in the fourth quarter. A field goal by Cairo Santos put the Bears ahead 38-35, with just over five minutes left. But the 49ers still had time, and Purdy utilized it well. He hit Jennings for a crucial 38-yard touchdown, swinging the score back in San Francisco’s favor.
Time ticked down, and the Bears found themselves in a tight spot with the clock running low. Williams scrambled but couldn’t link up with Jahde Walker in the end zone on a pivotal fourth-and-5 play.
This loss meant the Bears lost their grip on the No. 1 seed. In contrast, the 49ers are now within striking distance of clinching the championship, setting their sights on an upcoming matchup with the Seattle Seahawks.
In terms of individual performances, McCaffrey shone with 181 total yards, including 140 on the ground. Purdy completed 24 out of 33 passes, throwing for 303 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception while also running for two touchdowns.
For the Bears, Williams went 25 of 42 for 330 yards and two touchdowns, with Baden racking up 138 receiving yards off eight catches, including a touchdown.
