The 49ers will be without Christian McCaffrey for the foreseeable future.
The superstar running back was placed on injured reserve with calf tightness and Achilles tendinitis. According to ESPN:.
The 28-year-old McCaffrey will miss at least the next four games.
He had been battling the injury in recent weeks but was expected to be ready for the team's season opener but was unexpectedly sidelined for the 49ers' 32-19 win over the Jets.
Coach Kyle Shanahan had reported disappointingly on Friday that the 49ers were considering the injured list, but the team made the move on Saturday.
He was a limited participant in practice this week.
“That's something we're currently looking at,” Shanahan said Friday.[Thursday] “It's been a bad day for him. The pain has been intermittent but yesterday was the worst. We'll be talking about it together in the next 24 hours.”
In McCaffrey's absence, 49ers reserve Jordan Mason flourished in the season opener, rushing for 147 yards and a touchdown while averaging 5.3 yards per carry.
Earlier this week, McCaffrey seemed confident he would be able to play before the team ruled him out for Week 2 and then placed him on injured reserve.

“I'm prepared to play every week,” McCaffrey said Wednesday. “There were weeks where I wasn't even healthy enough to do a walk-through and I played the full game, but I woke up and my body was ready to do some really good things. Mentally I'm always ready to play, but I woke up and it was a really tough group decision.”
“It's disappointing not to be able to play but I'm looking at it as a chess move and hopefully it will help me for the rest of the season.”
