49ers release experienced running back just days before final roster decisions

The San Francisco 49ers have released veteran running back Patrick Taylor Jr. from their injured reserve list.

Being on the injured list meant that Taylor wasn’t counted as part of the team’s 90-man roster, so this move won’t impact the 49ers’ efforts to trim their roster down to 53 players.

Taylor sustained an abductor injury during the preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans, leading to his placement on injured reserve shortly after.

This preseason, Taylor had limited field time while vying for a roster spot, and unfortunately, he didn’t make much of an impact. In that initial game, he managed only 5 carries totaling -5 yards.

Last year, after signing with the 49ers, Taylor participated in 13 games. During that time, he ran the ball 39 times, racking up 183 yards and scoring a touchdown. He also caught 3 passes for 25 yards out of the backfield.

In a somewhat similar situation last season, he was again aiming for a backup position on the 49ers’ roster but ended up sidelined for the entire season due to another injury, landing him again on injured reserve.

Taylor began his professional career as an undrafted free agent with the Green Bay Packers in 2020, and during his first four years, he split time between the Packers and the New England Patriots.

While he didn’t see any game time with New England, over his career, Taylor has totaled 47 carries for 444 yards and 2 rushing touchdowns.
