The team released a statement Saturday about the shooting, saying the player was in stable condition.
“He suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and is in serious but stable condition,” the group wrote. “We ask that you respect his privacy at this time.”
San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said at a press conference that officers responded to a call near 77 Geary Street, near Grant Avenue, just after 3:30 p.m.
He went on to say that they found two people who had been shot, one was Pearsall and the other was a man who had attempted to rob Pearsall.
“Mr. Pearsall was walking alone when the suspect approached him and attempted to commit an armed robbery with a firearm,” Scott said. “A struggle ensued between Mr. Pearsall and the suspect, during which bullets were fired from the suspect's firearm, striking both Mr. Pearsall and the suspect.”
Scott said there is “no indication” that Pearsall was targeted because he is a professional athlete and police believe the suspect acted alone.
The suspect, a 17-year-old male from Tracy, has been arrested, Scott said.
“Violence like this has no place in our city and we will continue to work with District Attorney Brooke Jenkins to ensure justice is achieved in this case,” Scott said.
Pearsall's mother, Erin Pearsall, posted an update on her son's condition on Facebook.
“He was very lucky God protected him,” she wrote. “He was shot in the chest but the bullet exited through his back. Thank God it spared his vital organs. He is fine now.”
District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said she expects to make a charging decision by Tuesday or Wednesday and will file charges in juvenile court.
Pearsall was selected No. 31 by the San Francisco 49ers.st He was the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft. He missed training camp due to hamstring and shoulder injuries. He returned to practice last week in a non-contact blue jersey while waiting for his shoulder to heal.
