Democrats were met with an unexpected joy on election night, marking a significant victory during the second Trump administration. This win gave party members a sense of hope for the first time since Trump reclaimed the White House, which had led to some deep reflection among the left.
Here are five key takeaways regarding Election Night 2025.
Significant Wins for Socialists in New York
Zoran Mamdani, identifying as a socialist and running as a Democrat, triumphed over independent Andrew Cuomo in New York’s mayoral race with 50.1% to 40.6%. This marked a noteworthy win for the left during Trump’s second term. Mamdani’s policies are notably more progressive compared to many in his party, advocating for free public transportation, universal childcare, and subsidized grocery stores run by the government. He also aims to halt rent hikes for residents.
His stance on Israel is particularly contentious. As a Muslim, he condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza as akin to a “genocidal war,” yet he recognizes Israel’s right to exist democratically with equal rights for everyone, though he does not define it as a “Jewish state.”
While some commentators see Mamdani’s win as significant nationally, history reminds us that previous mayors of New York, like Rudy Giuliani, Bill de Blasio, and Michael Bloomberg, didn’t manage to establish a national movement.
Victory for Democrats in Virginia
The former Democratic Congresswoman, Abigail Spanberger, easily captured the governor’s seat in Virginia, becoming the first female to do so. She defeated Republican Winsome Earl Sears with 57% to 43%. Additionally, Democrats claimed wins in statewide roles for attorney general and lieutenant governor.
Spanberger pointed out that various factors—including federal layoffs and the government shutdown—were jeopardizing Virginia’s economy. “We sent a message tonight,” she declared to enthusiastic supporters, indicating that Virginia’s choice was one for pragmatism over partisanship.
Democrats also enhanced their representation in the state legislature, increasing their House seats from 51 to at least 64.
New Jersey Stays Blue
In the gubernatorial contest, Democrat Mikie Sherrill defeated Republican Jack Ciattarelli with 56% to 43%, ensuring three consecutive victories for the party. Sherrill takes over from Democrat Phil Murphy, who could not run for a third term. The last Republican governor in New Jersey was Chris Christie, elected back in 2009 and 2013.
In her victory speech, Sherrill emphasized her campaign’s focus on Trump, stating that New Jerseyans have “sworn an oath to the Constitution, not the King.” The crowd’s reaction seemed to reverberate nationwide through this vote.
California’s Redistricting Plan Approved
California voters chose to pass Prop. 50, granting the state legislature temporary authority to redraw House districts while sidelining the independent redistricting commission until after the 2030 cycle. This move, championed by Democratic leaders including Governor Gavin Newsom, aims to counter Republican strategies in other states aimed at gaining electoral advantages.
The passage of Prop. 50 with a vote of 64-36% could reshape the landscape for the 2026 Congressional elections, likely reducing Republican representation.
Can Republicans Succeed Without Trump?
Under Trump’s influence, the Republican Party experienced a transformation, achieving significant wins in 2016, 2020, and 2024. However, off-year elections have seen the party struggle to replicate that success. Following Trump’s win in 2018, Democrats regained control of the House, and four years later, scored a surprise Senate seat victory despite expectations of significant Republican gains.
Looking ahead to 2026, Republicans will face a crucial test without Trump on the ballot, as the next presidential election in 2028 will also be the first since 2012 without his name featured. It raises a pertinent question: can Republicans maintain their momentum in the post-Trump era? The answer remains uncertain.
