5-year-old child hit, killed by school bus in New York

A 5-year-old girl has died after being hit by a school bus in Rockland County, New York, authorities said.

The incident happened around 11:15 a.m. Friday on South Madison Avenue near Hillman Place in Spring Valley, Fox 5 New York reported.

The school bus driver who hit the child was distraught after the incident, witnesses told CBS New York.

A woman familiar with the girl’s family told CBS New York that a funeral was held in the neighboring town of Mondsee.

Neighbors are calling for the speed limit to be lowered following the girl’s death.

“My condolences,” Spring Valley resident Jean Focus told CBS New York. “People who ride the bus have to be careful. They have to watch where the kids are going. I don’t even know how it happened, but how can you not see people crossing the road? Is not it?”

“It’s disappointing,” Spring Valley resident Brian DeMasi said. “They’re going too fast down this street. They’re going too fast. They’re not slowing down.”

It is not clear at this time what led to the crash.

This incident is still under investigation.
