A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday when a digital whiteboard fell on a 5-year-old boy, Bellamy Dawkins-Morris, at his elementary school in Florida, resulting in his death. His family is now searching for answers regarding the incident.
Emergency responders arrived at Riviera Elementary School in Palm Bay around 11:30 a.m. They found staff and paramedics urgently trying to assist Bellamy.
Unfortunately, despite their efforts, he later passed away at a hospital, as reported by local news.
“This is a tragedy that should never happen to Bellamy. Our family is grieving terribly,” said Melissa Rodriguez, the boy’s great-aunt.
She expressed frustration, stating, “They should’ve been paying more attention to him.”
In light of the incident, Brevard County Schools is hurrying to examine all similar Smartboard-style displays at their locations.
“We recognize that this tragedy might generate questions and concerns among families and staff about related equipment in our schools,” the district commented.
They assured that Promethean boards are installed by licensed vendors following manufacturer guidelines.
In a message sent to parents, the district noted, “We are saddened by the heartbreaking news of a tragic accident that occurred yesterday at Riviera Elementary School.”
They explained that a five-year-old student suffered serious injuries when a large mounted video display fell on him.
“Despite immediate emergency medical care and ongoing efforts from medical personnel, the student sadly did not survive,” their statement added.
Bellamy, who was on the autism spectrum, was loved and cherished by his family.
“This little boy was adored by everyone in his family and anyone who ever met him,” Rodriguez shared.
“He was always happy, smiling, and making everyone laugh. He is missed so much. We want justice for Bellamy.”
The family is contemplating legal action following the event. Rodriguez emphasized, “The family is still angry and hurt. Our hearts are shattered. We are seeking legal counsel.”
