51 percent oppose Trump tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China: Poll

A Quinnipiac University poll found that just over half of U.S. voters, 51 percent, oppose President-elect Trump's plan to impose tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada and China.

According to the survey, 51% of respondents opposed President Trump's tariff plan, while 38% supported it.

A majority of Democrats (89%), Republicans (76%) and independents (53%) also opposed the plan, according to the poll.

The survey found that 34% of independents support President Trump's tariff plan, compared to 12% of Republicans and 7% of Democrats.

President Trump's tariff threats are met with a mix of concerns and warnings from world leaders, particularly Canada and Mexico, the United States' two largest trading partners. Canada's Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned earlier this week, citing President Trump's tariff plans in her resignation letter.

Trade experts are also sounding the alarm on President Trump's tariff plans, warning of the economic impact.

The Quinnipiac University poll was conducted Dec. 12-16 among 924 self-identified registered voters in the United States and had a margin of error of 3.2 percentage points.
