The USDA has cancelled a grant worth $600,000 for research into menstrual cycles in transgender men, Secretary Brook Rollins said Friday.
According to the USaspending.gov database, the Southern University Agriculture and Mechanical College of Louisiana were grant recipients.
“The first occurrence of menstruation occurs at about 12 years of age and ends at about 51 years of age,” reads the grant explanation. “Women get a menstrual cycle every month for about 40 years of their lives, and on average it is around 450 periods over their life.”
“It is also important to recognize that transgender men and male gender identities, intersex, non-binary people can also menstruate,” the explanation adds. “Around 26% of the world's population is always menstruating.”
This study aims to “address growing concerns” related to menstruation, including the potential use of natural fibers such as hemp in feminine hygiene products.
