Devastating Floods and Landslides in Mexico

Heavy rains in Mexico have led to tragic flooding and landslides, claiming numerous lives and leaving behind widespread destruction. Video footage vividly captures the aftermath of the disaster.

According to reports, authorities are currently engaged in search efforts for missing individuals and initiating cleanup operations. As of the latest updates, the death toll has climbed to 64, with 65 people still unaccounted for following the storm that struck east-central Mexico.

The Civil Protection Agency of Mexico indicated that 29 fatalities occurred in Veracruz, while 21 were reported in Hidalgo, and an additional 13 people lost their lives in Puebla. A child was also killed due to a landslide in Queretaro.

Between Monday and Thursday of last week, approximately 21 inches (54 centimeters) of rain fell in parts of Veracruz, exacerbating the already dire situation.

In video footage, individuals navigated through flooded streets, passing wrecked buildings and damaged vehicles. The potential for the death toll to increase remains a concern as cleanup crews tackle the mud and debris that have engulfed communities. This severe weather was attributed to two tropical cyclones that have since dissipated.

Shadak Azuara traveled to Poza Rica in search of his uncle but faced an empty home when he knocked, leading him to believe his relatives had evacuated. However, upon returning the next day, he was devastated to find his uncle submerged in water within the house, a victim of apparent drowning. “We thought he had left with everyone else,” he shared, still grappling with the shock of the discovery.

In response to the crisis, President Claudia Sheinbaum has vowed to provide assistance to the communities impacted by the storms and flooding. During a visit to an evacuation center in Huauchinango, she assured residents that a comprehensive damage assessment would be carried out and that support would be available for those needing to rebuild their homes.
