A 64-year-old straphanger was kicked to the pavement at Penn Station on Sunday in the first of two subway attacks on the Big Apple’s beleaguered transit system, police said. Ta.
According to authorities, the man was kicked in the back by an unknown male on the northbound A, C and E platform at 34th Street and 8th Avenue around 5 p.m., causing him to fall onto the tracks.
Police said the man was helped to safety by other straphangers and taken to Lenox Health Greenwich Village Hospital, where he was treated for knee and back pain.
Law enforcement officials say the victim was using a cell phone when the suspect approached her and asked questions. According to officials, the victim could not understand the assailant and assaulted him.
In a separate assault Sunday around 8 p.m., a 19-year-old woman was punched in the face by a female assailant after two people got into an argument on the mezzanine of the 168th Street subway station in Washington Heights, police said.
Police said an 18-year-old man who was with the 19-year-old boy also dropped his cell phone and had it stolen while trying to break up an argument.
The young woman was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Columbia University Medical Center in stable condition.
Investigations are continuing in both cases, and no arrests have been made.
The two subway incidents are the latest in a growing trend of violence, including multiple shootings and stabbings, to hit the city’s transit system in recent weeks.
