65% of Democrats say Biden should drop out after debate disaster, poll finds

A new poll released Wednesday found that 65% of Democrats say President Biden should withdraw from the debates after his dismal performance against former President Trump.

The AP-NORC poll, conducted July 11-15 and largely completed before Trump’s assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania over the weekend, found that 7 in 10 adults (65% of Democrats) think Biden should withdraw and the party should choose another candidate.

Overall, 57% of adults say Trump should drop out of the race and allow his party to nominate a replacement, but he has maintained his party’s support, with 73% of Republicans saying he should remain in the race.

Biden is facing more resistance from within his own party, with only 35% of Democrats saying he should continue his reelection campaign.

According to the Associated Press, the survey found that more people viewed Biden as honest than shared the same view as Trump, but they were also more likely to see Trump as more capable of winning the election in November and better able to handle a crisis.

Black Democrats are among Biden’s strongest supporters: Half of black Democrats say Biden should continue to run, while only a third of white and Hispanic Democrats say the same.

Younger Democrats are more likely to want Biden to drop out of the race: Three-quarters of Democrats under 45 want him to drop out, compared with 57% of Democrats over 45.
