A JL Partners poll conducted Friday found that 68% of independents want President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race following his dismal debate performance, while 32% say he should remain the Democratic nominee.
After Thursday’s performance, pressure mounted for Biden to resign as many Democrats and members of the media expressed hysteria over his performance. Biden campaign officials said Biden would continue to campaign. Biden will reportedly also take part in the ABC News debate in September.
Among independents who voted for Biden in 2020, 41% say he should drop out of the race, according to the poll.
Forty-four percent of independents said they planned to vote for former President Donald Trump, up about four points after the debate.
In contrast, the poll found that Mr Biden has lost support: Just 24% said they intended to vote for him, down from 28% before the debate.

The poll asked voters, “Do you think Joe Biden should remain the Democratic nominee for president, or do you think there should be another Democratic nominee for president?”
- Yes: 29 percent
- No: 64 percent
Among Democrats, a slight majority said Biden should remain the nominee.
- Yes: 52 percent
- No: 45 percent
An overwhelming majority of independents said Biden should not remain the nominee.
- Yes: 21 percent
- No: 71 percent
The poll found that 20% of voters believe Biden’s America is “headed in the wrong direction” and 70% say he is too old to be an “effective president”.
When asked which candidate they expected to win the November election, former President Donald Trump led Biden by 10 points, 48 to 38 percent.
