Tragic Incident at Philadelphia High School
A retired teacher tragically lost her life after a large, unattended utility pole fell on her while she was walking on the tracks at a Philadelphia high school. The lawsuit filed by her family claims that this incident occurred due to negligence by a school administrator.
According to court documents, on December 5, 2024, a 45-foot wooden pole that had reportedly been deteriorating for over a decade snapped at its base and struck Paula Budin at the athletic complex of Roxborough High School.
When someone passing by found the 73-year-old, she was unresponsive and bleeding. Emergency responders were unable to revive her, as detailed in the lawsuit obtained by local media.
The official cause of death was ruled blunt force trauma, as stated in the family’s lawsuit filed in Philadelphia.
The lawsuit alleges that both the Philadelphia School District and an evaluation company, Parsons, failed to inspect or maintain the decayed poles. Signs of decay had been apparent since at least 2014, according to the documents.
The family’s attorneys argued that the school district had a duty to act on this knowledge and warn students and community members about the risks involved.
Documents indicate that the faulty poles, including the one that fell, were used to support lighting on the school grounds, which are generally open to the public. After Budin’s death, the school district did remove the other three utility poles, but investigations revealed they had not undergone inspections before the incident.
The pole that impacted Budin was found buried in grass near a storm drain filled with debris and standing water, which contributed to its deteriorating condition, as noted in the complaint.
Budin was a retiree who led an active lifestyle and had previously taught at Germantown Academy and Community Partnership School. She was known to be very close to her family, including two sisters, two nephews, and a niece.
Her family is now pursuing damages from the school district and Parsons, citing negligence in the handling of the situation.
In response to the incident, a spokesperson for the Philadelphia School District stated they cannot comment on ongoing litigation but acknowledged the tragedy of Budin’s death. Parsons has yet to provide any comments regarding the lawsuit.
