74-year-old man faces $1 million bond after allegedly shooting and killing another hunting land owner.

Shooting Incident in Wisconsin

On the evening of November 12, around 9:15 p.m., sheriff’s deputies were summoned to a residence on M County Road in Germania, which is located less than 110 miles northwest of Green Bay, due to reports of a shooting.

The dispatcher received a call stating that a 74-year-old man named Brent Hoffman had allegedly shot his friend inside his garage.

The caller mentioned he had taken refuge in a building on the property and was prepared to defend himself if necessary.

Authorities later reported that Hoffman tried to get into the building where the caller had barricaded himself, prompting the caller to fire a .22-caliber rifle at Hoffman through a glass door.

When the police arrived, they found Hoffman wounded outside, suffering from serious facial injuries caused by broken glass.

Initially, Hoffman resisted police commands but was ultimately taken into custody. Officers observed that he appeared to be heavily intoxicated, showing signs of slurred speech.

Investigators discovered the victim dead in the garage during a search of the property.

After receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital, Hoffman was booked into the Shawano County Jail. His first court appearance via video was on November 18.

Hoffman has been formally charged with first-degree intentional homicide, attempted first-degree murder, and armed while intoxicated. It’s noteworthy that both murder charges come with severe penalties, especially regarding crimes against the elderly.

The victim has been identified as 67-year-old Rick Roundy from Greenleaf, and it was revealed that all three individuals involved were connected through shared ownership of hunting land in the Germania area.

Shawano County District Attorney Gregory Parker detailed the criminal complaint during a hearing, stating that Hoffman and Roundy had known each other for years through their mutual interest in hunting and joint property ownership. According to Parker, the investigation indicated there were no provocations to justify such violent actions from Hoffman.

“This is nothing short of a cold-blooded murder,” Parker remarked.

Hoffman’s bail has been set at $1 million.

The family of Roundy released a statement expressing their devastation over the loss of a cherished family member and requested privacy during this challenging time.

A status conference has been scheduled for January 5, while Hoffman continues to remain in the Shawano County Jail.
