Suspect Arrested in Puppy Abandonment Case

Authorities in Southern California have captured a suspect linked to the heartbreaking death of a puppy. This followed a significant public outcry after shocking surveillance footage surfaced, displaying a minivan driver enticing a puppy to come close by placing food near a vehicle’s tire.

The Santa Ana Police Department apprehended 75-year-old Hahn Nguyen from Anaheim, tracing her vehicle using Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology along with tips generated by the viral video.

Nguyen now faces charges of felony animal cruelty and animal abandonment after being booked into the Santa Ana Jail. The police also found the suspect’s vehicle, an older-model Honda Odyssey minivan, parked in her garage at home.

“Using Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology, detectives identified the vehicle involved and an associated address in the City of Anaheim. This morning, SAPD detectives arrested 75-year-old Hahn Nguyen, who admitted to owning and abandoning her 9-month-old pit bull, ‘Blackey.’ Detectives also located the vehicle parked inside her garage,” stated the Santa Ana Police Department on social media.

This investigation originated from a dreadful incident that occurred on September 8th near West Park Lane in Santa Ana. Home security cameras captured the distressing moment when a 9-month-old pit bull mix named Blackey was abandoned.

In the footage, the driver eased onto a quiet residential street, took the puppy from the vehicle, and placed food on the ground near the tires. As the unsuspecting puppy crouched to eat, the driver proceeded to drive forward slowly, ultimately crushing the innocent animal beneath the rear tire — a truly shocking act.

The minivan stayed on top of the suffering puppy for about 15 seconds before the driver sped off, leaving the injured animal to perish on the street. Police shared clips of the video in hopes of identifying the perpetrator, which resulted in widespread outrage across social media.

Although the initial neighborhood surveillance did not provide a clear view of the vehicle’s license plate, detective work and hits from regional ALPR cameras helped narrow down potential suspects. Upon her arrest, authorities announced that Nguyen confessed to owning and abandoning the puppy.

Law enforcement officials expressed gratitude to community members who circulated descriptions of the suspect and shared vital information, which aided in the quick arrest.

Nguyen is now facing several years in prison and substantial fines due to California’s laws on severe animal cruelty. So far, it’s unclear if she has posted bail or remains in custody, as such details are usually updated after her initial court appearance.

Interestingly, no family members have publicly commented or reached out to the media regarding this situation.

As reported, Nguyen’s boyfriend came up in discussions surrounding the incident. Reportedly, she claimed that he was upset because the puppy had been chewing on his shoes, which supposedly led her to consider abandoning the dog.
