76ers choose V.J. Edgecombe in a highly discussed NBA draft selection

VJ Edgecombe is heading to Philadelphia.

The 76ers selected the Baylor guard with the third overall pick, following discussions about whether to trade the pick or take a chance on Rutgers’ standout, Ace Bailey.

Edgecombe was picked after the Mavericks secured the top pick in the draft and the Spurs selected Dylan Harper second overall.

“I’m really excited. We had nothing,” Edgecombe shared with ESPN shortly after being drafted. “We’re truly blessed to be in this position. There’s a lot of emotion right now.”

In his freshman season, Edgecombe averaged 15.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 2.1 steals per game.

He’s particularly noted for his three-point shooting, aiming to support the 76ers next season after shooting 34% from beyond the arc.

Considered one of the most athletic prospects this year, he has drawn comparisons to NBA legend Dwyane Wade.

“Scouts have written about him,” a scout noted. “There are doubts about his shooting until the moment comes to make a game-winning shot. He hits that shot.”

Interestingly, Edgecombe was the only draft prospect to work out for the Sixers before the draft, with reports suggesting he appeared “stiff” during the visit.

In May, the 76ers moved up two spots in the draft lottery, allowing them to keep the pick from the Thunder—a deal linked to Al Horford’s trade to Oklahoma City.

This draft is significant; it’s the first time in a decade that the 76ers have landed the third overall pick.
