After losing to the Knicks in the first round of the NBA playoffs, the 76ers will make some big changes in the offseason.
President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey said Monday, four days after the Sixers lost at home to the Knicks in Game 6, that all options are on the table to surround Joel Embiid with the right lineup for a championship run. He said it was above. NBA Championship.
“There are going to be big changes,” Morley told reporters. “except [head coach] Nick Nurse, Joel, Tyrese [Maxey] and paul [Reed] and ricky [Council IV]We don’t know who will be back next year. ”
The 76ers had yet to advance past the second round of the playoffs under Embiid, and Nurse was hired last year after firing Doc Rivers, who lost in the second round in each of his three seasons as 76ers coach.
Philadelphia was the No. 7 seed in the East, and Embiid was limited to 39 regular season games due to injury.
Embiid overcame knee problems and Bell’s palsy throughout the six-game series, and his on-court behavior made him a villain to Knicks fans.
“They fought hard. It was a great series,” Morey said. “I wish we could have brought it back to Madison Square Garden. I think it was a much more fun fight.”
This series solidified Maxey as a legitimate second star, but beyond that there are big question marks on the Sixers’ roster.
Tobias Harris averaged just nine points per game in the series loss to the Knicks, and his five-year, $180 million contract expired. Veteran guard Kyle Lowry (38) may not have much left.
Kelly Oubre Jr. made a big contribution to his one-year, $2.8 million contract, but he may be looking for an even bigger paycheck this offseason.
The 6-foot-9 Reed, 24, was a second-round pick in 2020, and Council, 22, played in 32 regular-season games as an undrafted rookie free agent.
“This offseason is a big offseason,” Morey said. “It’s all thanks to the fans, owners and everyone for putting this team in a position to compete for a championship.”
