The Philadelphia 76ers seem to have made a choice regarding LeBron James’ position.
Just a week ago, there was uncertainty about his inclusion in the team. However, reports now suggest the 76ers have defined his role for the upcoming season.
NBA insider Shams Charania has mentioned that the team intends to utilize the 41-year-old as their point guard. In a now-deleted post on ESPN’s X, Charania talked about James managing the offense in Philadelphia.
“I’ve been told the Sixers expect LeBron James to step in as the point guard, replace Nick Nurse, and play key minutes during games,” Charania noted on Monday.
“Tyrese Maxey had considerable ball-handling duties last season, and we recognize his scoring ability off the ball. There are other capable players like Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, and VJ Edgecombe who can contribute significantly. They can share the load with LeBron.”
This wouldn’t be James’ first experience in this role. During the 2019-20 season, he averaged a noteworthy 10.2 assists while playing for the Los Angeles Lakers.
Interestingly, the Lakers won the NBA championship that same season.
Given that the 76ers have lacked a true point guard, it’s reasonable for James to take the reins despite his age.
Having signed a two-year, $8 million contract with the 76ers, basketball fans are now eager to see how the veteran will perform with the team.
The 76ers will likely make every effort to support James as he transitions to the Eastern Conference, where orchestrating the offense is among his many skills. Throughout his illustrious career, James has often drawn comparisons to Magic Johnson due to his excellent court vision.
The starting lineup for the 76ers looks promising. But one pressing question lingers: Will there be too many players stepping on each other’s toes?
