Indiana Man Accused in Triple Murder
A 77-year-old man from Indiana, Patrick Waite, called the police after reportedly shooting three family members, including his wife, mother-in-law, and son-in-law. This shocking incident has left the community grappling with the aftermath of such violence.
Waite is facing three counts of murder for allegedly methodically shooting his 61-year-old wife, Alma, her 81-year-old mother, Gloria Tapia, and 39-year-old son, Fernando Tapia Ramirez Sr., in their shared home in Haubstadt, according to police affidavits.
Following the shootings, Waite made a 911 call to confess. He calmly explained what had occurred and indicated where officers could find the victims, stating, “I shot them all. I’m certainly not proud of the fact,” in a seemingly casual tone, as noted in an affidavit.
There were also four other individuals present in the home during the tragic event, including a child, all of whom escaped unharmed. Reports suggest that Waite had gone outside to shoot near a lake before returning to the house, where a disagreement with his wife escalated. Authorities indicate that the couple had been negotiating a potential divorce.
The argument reportedly stemmed from multiple issues, including conflicts about attending Bible studies and neglecting Waite’s bedridden mother. Tensions escalated over the ownership of the home, with Waite expressing that he felt entitled to stay since he had lived there for 27 years.
After the shootings, Waite reportedly expressed remorse, acknowledging his actions and claiming he wouldn’t be forgiven by God. A cousin of the victims, Veronica Valenzuela, indicated she was taken aback by the incident, sharing that Waite had always seemed kind and had shown hospitality to her family.
Valenzuela’s GoFundMe campaign aims to help with funeral expenses as the family grapples with the loss. Waite, who has no prior criminal record, appeared in court via video and has pleaded not guilty. His lawyer has yet to comment on the situation.
