Florida Boater Receives Probation after Teen’s Death
A 79-year-old man has been sentenced to at least six months of probation in connection with the tragic death of a Florida teenager while boating. Carlos Guillermo “Bill” Alonso was operating the boat that struck 15-year-old Ella Adler in May 2024.
Alonso pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges. Prosecutors had initially filed two counts against him for negligent boat operation. As part of his sentence, he received a suspended six-month jail term, which could be extended to 12 months of probation, as reported. Miami-Dade County Court Judge Julie Harris Nelson indicated that if he fulfills all conditions of his plea agreement, he might complete his probation in six months and could potentially petition the court to withdraw his guilty plea.
His sentence includes attending a 75-hour boating safety course, making a donation of $5,000 to the Florida Crime Victim Compensation Fund in Adler’s name, and paying a $500 fine along with court costs. While on probation, he will not be allowed to operate a boat.
Ella was wakeboarding in Biscayne Bay when she fell into the water and was hit by Alonso’s boat. His attorney claimed that he was not under the influence at the time and was unaware he had struck anyone.
Adler, a talented ballerina and student at Ransom Everglades High School, was also the granddaughter of former U.S. Ambassador to Belgium, Michael Adler.
Alonso’s lawyer described the incident as a “tragic accident,” expressing condolences to the Adler family. She noted that Alonso did not intend to cause harm and hoped his guilty plea might bring some relief to Ella’s family and highlight the Ella Riley Adler Foundation.
Additionally, the captain of the yacht that was towing Adler, Edmund Richard Hartley, faces four counts of careless boat operation, including one charge related to failing to keep a proper lookout for her.
