A majority of U.S. adults believe religion is losing influence in public life, new Pew Research Center says investigation found.
Overall, 80 percent of U.S. adults say the role of religion in American life is shrinking, “the percentage is higher than ever,” according to the poll report. Almost half (49%) say the declining influence of religion in public life is a “bad thing.” Eight percent said the influence of religion is “growing, and that’s a good thing.”
Only 6% say the influence of religion is “increasing, which is a bad thing,” while only 6% say the influence of religion is “decreasing, which is a good thing.” It was 13%.
The poll found that just over one in five Americans felt neutral about religion’s influence on public life. 3% said it was “growing but not changing,” and 18% said it was “decreasing but not changing.”
