According to Madisonville police, officers were called to the boy’s home around 6:30 a.m. Friday after the boy was having trouble breathing and was unresponsive. The boy’s parents said he ate “a few strawberries that he bought at a high school fundraiser the night before.”
The boy developed symptoms the night he ate strawberries, and his parents gave him Benadryl and bathed him, according to the report. However, his symptoms continued to worsen, so he was taken to a local emergency room around 10:30 p.m. The family finally took the boy home several hours later.
On Friday morning, the family tried to wake the boy up for school, but he was unresponsive. After detectives were alerted to the strawberry problem, they discovered that the emergency room had seen other people in the same department allegedly eating the strawberries, the news outlet said. WKYT.
Following this discovery, the Hopkins County Health Department warned local residents not to eat strawberries purchased at Hopkins County school fundraisers.

There have been no warnings that fruit grown there may be contaminated, but environmental experts with the Department of Public Health are taking samples and taking them to a state lab for testing.
It is currently unknown whether anyone else who ate the strawberries had a severe allergic reaction. It’s also unclear whether the people who went to the emergency room after eating the strawberries experienced the same symptoms as the 8-year-old who died.
