Border Patrol agents apprehended more than 902,000 immigrants who entered the United States illegally between ports of entry in the first five months of this fiscal year. This is slightly down from the same period in 2023 and up nearly 12% from the year-to-date figure in 2022.
From October 1, 2023 to February 29, 2024, Border Patrol apprehended 902,113 immigrants who illegally crossed the border between ports of entry. This is about the same pace as the 903,693 immigrants arrested during the same period in 2023. Agents arrested just 806,299 people in the record-breaking first five months of fiscal year 2022, and continued to apprehend more than 2.2 million immigrants throughout the year.
Due to a combination of factors, the number of apprehensions in the five Texas-based border sectors declined from approximately 561,000 in the first five months of 2023 to approximately 407,000 in 2024 (approximately 28 % decrease). These factors include increased border enforcement by Texas with Operation Lone Star and aggressive efforts in Mexico to remove migrants from its northern border and relocate them to south-central Mexico.

In contrast, the number of immigrants arrested for entering the Tucson area illegally increased from more than 112,000 in 2023 to more than 300,000 in 2024 (a 167% increase). Agents in the San Diego area also saw a significant increase in the number of immigrants arrested, from approximately 86,000 in fiscal 2013 to nearly 152,000 in fiscal 2014 (a 76% increase).
Additionally, migrant insecurity has increased in all sectors along the northern border this year compared to last year.
