Ocasio-Cortez Highlights Meeting with Candidate Mamdani
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) shared insights from a recent meeting involving New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani and several Democrats in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday.
In a conversation with Fox News, Ocasio-Cortez commented on how Mamdani’s approach resonated during the “Breakfast for Communication and Organizing Skillsharing” event. She described his insights as critical for enhancing techniques within the party.
Ocasio-Cortez encouraged skeptics of Mamdani to actually get to know him rather than relying on media portrayals. She acknowledged her party for allowing him an opportunity to prove himself and emphasized the importance of listening and understanding.
However, when questioned by reporters about the support from House Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), Ocasio-Cortez refrained from confirming or denying any backing for Mamdani.
Democratic Support in Limbo
Even as Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer plan to meet with Mamdani later in the week, key Democratic leaders in New York still haven’t formally thrown their weight behind the self-described democratic socialist candidate.
Ocasio-Cortez expressed a desire for her party to succeed, highlighting that Mamdani, as a Democratic candidate, is favored to win the upcoming general election. Her hope is that the next mayor from the Democratic side can thrive.
Since her rise to prominence in 2018, Ocasio-Cortez has been a significant figure in progressive politics. During the meeting, she noted how the media often misrepresents individuals, suggesting that understanding them personally would perhaps change perceptions.
On the Hill, Senator Bernie Sanders was seen taking photos with Mamdani, voicing his support ahead of Mamdani’s earlier success in the democratic race. Sanders praised Mamdani’s grassroots efforts and reiterated a commitment to defending democracy against corporate interests.
Mamdani expressed admiration for Sanders, referring to him as a personal hero and noting their shared roots from Brooklyn.
Mixed Responses from Democrats
Some representatives had varying levels of participation in the event. For instance, Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-N.Y.) chose not to attend, while Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.) commended Mamdani’s savvy use of social media. However, she also expressed concern about the rhetoric surrounding the party’s shift towards socialism.
Prominent progressive figures, including Rep. Pramila Jayapal and Rep. Ro Khanna, also left positive remarks about Mamdani, with Khanna calling him “very impressive.”
As the breakfast meeting concluded, Mamdani’s campaign focused largely on messaging around affordability, though details about specific policies he hopes to implement if elected remain sparse.
