Trusted Long Island surgeon passes away unexpectedly after North Fork triathlon

Dr. Peter Sultan, a cherished orthopedic surgeon from Long Island who was known for his heartfelt interactions with patients, tragically passed away on Sunday during a local triathlon.

The 54-year-old, affiliated with Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, collapsed while participating in the James Port Triathlon, an annual event linked to the hospital. His sudden demise left both colleagues and family in shock and mourning.

“We are profoundly saddened to report the passing of Dr. Peter Sultan, a compassionate and skilled physician whose commitment to patient care and the community deeply impacted those around him,” stated Northwell Health.

Dr. Sultan was not just a trusted medical professional; he was also a mentor and friend to many. His influence can be seen in the numerous lives he touched throughout his distinguished career, which many feel is a significant loss.

A dedicated athlete, he was well-known for boosting the morale of his patients and their families with his lively personality and love for music. He often practiced for endurance races, balancing his professional and athletic commitments.

The West Hampton resident, also an accomplished pianist, would sometimes perform in the hospital lobby, bringing a sense of ease to nervous patients. He often jammed with his musical partner, Jerome Foster Lewis, serenading families post-surgery.

Lewis remarked, “Those impromptu concerts were just what patients needed.” He added that the experience was uplifting for everyone involved. “Dr. Sultan always said, ‘Medicine heals the body; music heals the soul.’ While people recognized his analytical side, I saw the artist in him. It was a remarkable aspect of who he was,” he shared.

Since Dr. Sultan’s passing, the usually vibrant atmosphere at the hospital has been hauntingly quiet. Lisa Hubbard, the director of orthopedic services, noted that this was a stark change in a place that was traditionally lively.

“Everyone adored Dr. Sultan. The grief is palpable,” she expressed, recalling their professional journey together since 2005.

A Harvard Medical School graduate, Dr. Sultan served for nine years as the chairman of the Orthopedic Surgery Office. His dedication made him one of New York’s top surgeons specializing in hip and knee replacements. In 2012, he was honored with the Hospital Physician of the Year Award.

“Orthopedics fundamentally transformed this hospital,” remarked Amy Loeb, executive director of PMBC. “Dr. Sultan played a pivotal role in enhancing both the hospital and community reputation. He positively affected countless patients’ lives.”

“His commitment to his patients, his practice, and the hospital was remarkable,” she added. “He was simply an exceptional person.”

A service to honor Dr. Sultan will be held on Thursday at 11 AM at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead.
