Former ESPN host addresses firing after comments on transgender athletes

Samantha Ponder has remained relatively quiet about her departure from ESPN until recently. In 2023, she took to social media to share her views on the topic of transgender athletes in women’s sports, sparking some controversy.

During a podcast with Sage Steele, Ponder discussed the experiences of Paula Scanlan, who swam alongside Leah Thomas. Following this, higher-ups at ESPN reached out to both Ponder and Steele. Ponder reflected, “I wasn’t expecting much backlash, but I got it.” She noted that the executives were uneasy about her comments concerning trans women in women’s sports, claiming she misrepresented the discussions.

Ponder revealed she received a “detailed email” indicating that her previous tweets had been deemed offensive, which made her aware that the network was monitoring her. This led her to avoid creating videos about Riley Gaines as part of an ESPN initiative focused on recognizing inspirational women.

Her perspective shifted, however, when Iman Kelif caught her attention. Ponder had posted a quote from Olympic competitor Angela Carini, expressing pride in Kelif, who had previously faced exclusion from a boxing event after failing a gender eligibility test. She commented, “We’re all thinking it! I’m proud of her.” Shortly after, she received a message asking if she could discuss her situation with network executives, leading her to feel concern about the workplace dynamics.

Ponder speculated that other factors might have led to her firing, including economic considerations, but she emphasized her desire to prioritize her family alongside her career. “The timing felt almost too perfect,” she said, as ESPN executives had previously appeared to share her views on the issues she raised.

Reflecting on her departure, Ponder mentioned that it had ultimately been a positive turning point for her. “I was stuck in that routine and didn’t leave on my own terms. It’s like I had to force myself off that hamster wheel,” she stated, expressing her frustration over the limitations imposed on her discussions regarding such critical topics.

Ponder questioned why she was discouraged from addressing these issues, insisting they are indeed part of sports. “We’re talking about female athletes at all levels; their voices matter,” she asserted. This sentiment, she felt, had not received the attention it deserved. Despite the backlash, she continues to advocate for open dialogue on these subjects. ESPN has chosen not to comment publicly on her remarks.

Outside of her professional life, Ponder is married to former NFL quarterback Christian Ponder.
