US Condemns Houthi Attacks Amid Ongoing Regional Tensions
On Sunday, the State Department criticized the Yemen-backed Houthi movement following a deadly incident involving Israeli cargo ships. This escalation has prompted President Trump to call for renewed support for Yemen’s legitimate government as a means to challenge the Houthi administration.
Walid Phares, an expert on the Middle East, shared his insights, suggesting that Iran is merely stalling in negotiations with Hamas and the Tehran regime. He believes Iran is using this time to extend its influence in the region.
Phares also argues that if talks fail, it’s crucial to mobilize ground forces aligned with Yemen’s legitimate government, which currently exists in exile in Aden, along with local militias.
Trump has opted to suspend military strikes against the Houthis, yet experts caution that Iranian-backed terrorist factions continue to pose a significant threat.
During his 2016 presidential campaign, Phares advised Trump, asserting that the U.S. should financially support and train local forces for new military initiatives along the Red Sea. He believes that doing so could eliminate the Houthi threat and facilitate future negotiations unconnected to Iranian influence.
In May, after a military campaign targeting the Houthi movement, they declared they would cease hostilities. However, reports indicate that they have not upheld this commitment, resulting in continued attacks in the Red Sea.
Department of Defense spokesperson Sean Parnell noted the department’s readiness to confront any parties, state or non-state, that might exacerbate regional tensions. He emphasized the need for vigilance against threats from Iran or its proxies.
The situation escalated further on July 7 when Israel engaged in missile exchanges with Yemen’s Houthi rebels, targeting their ports as a response to a reported attack on a vessel in the Red Sea.
The initial Israeli strike was in retaliation for explosives being used in attacks on a Liberian-flagged ship, which prompted the crew to abandon it. The Houthis have yet to take responsibility for this incident, although Israeli forces pre-warned about the strikes on key Houthi ports, believed to be involved in arms transfers from Iran.
Last week, a Houthi attack resulted in the sinking of the bulk carrier Magic Seas, which tragically left four dead and several others missing.
There have been indications that these actions are part of a broader Houthi campaign reflecting tensions over the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has also affected maritime security in the region.
A spokesperson for the State Department condemned these incidents, highlighting the resulting injuries to seafarers and the sinking of cargo ships. The U.S. supports Israel’s right to defend itself against these aggressions.
The Trump administration reinstated the Houthi movement’s terrorist designation after the Biden administration had previously removed it from the list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations.
The Houthi movement’s official motto contains inflammatory language against America and Israel, underscoring the ongoing strife.
