Honored ex-officer drowns while saving swimmers, remembered as a hero

Tragic Drowning Incident in South Carolina

A former police officer and ex-minor league baseball player, Chase Childer, aged 38, lost his life while heroically attempting to save swimmers caught in dangerous rip currents off the coast of South Carolina.

Childer’s efforts took place near Paulies Island on July 13, where he bravely intervened to assist several swimmers in distress. Unfortunately, while others managed to return to safety, Childer drowned. Emergency responders located his body roughly 90 minutes after they received the first distress call.

The local police provided additional context about the incident, stating, “We entered the water to help the victim and others in trouble. Tragically, Mr. Childer became trapped in the currents as well.” It was noted that both Midway Fire and Rescue and the US Coast Guard were involved in the recovery efforts.

Brian Henry, the mayor of Paulies Island, expressed sorrow over the tragedy. He conveyed condolences to the family and appreciation for the first responders’ dedication. Henry also mentioned that the town would consider ways to improve safety regarding rip currents, though he was careful to clarify that, to his knowledge, no one else besides Childer had perished in this incident.

In a show of community support, a GoFundMe campaign set up in Childer’s honor surpassed its fundraising goal, raising over $104,000 intended for his wife, Natalie, and their children. Reflecting on Childer’s legacy, the campaign highlighted an award he received during his service in Cobb County, Georgia, although details about the specific acts that earned him accolades were not elaborated upon.
