Golden Knights’ Coaching Shakeup Sparks Interest in Cassidy
Respect and sportsmanship are crucial, but there’s something I really appreciate about healthy competition. And, well, that’s exactly what the Las Vegas Golden Knights are delivering.
Right now, Vegas is still in the playoffs, locked in a 2-2 tie with the Anaheim Ducks. But things took a surprising turn at the end of the regular season. With just eight games left and the team cruising toward the playoffs, they made headlines by firing their head coach, Bruce Cassidy. This was quite the shock, especially considering he had just led them to a Stanley Cup victory in 2023. The team decided to bring in John Tortorella as his replacement.
This sudden change has undoubtedly made Cassidy, a former Jack Adams Award winner, the most sought-after coach in the market.
Interestingly, the Edmonton Oilers are reportedly eyeing Cassidy, but they needed Vegas’s permission to discuss things with him.
Vegas did grant that, but surprisingly, they didn’t allow the Oilers to pursue him, according to insider Frank Seravalli. The Golden Knights may have a bit of a bad reputation, yet I find that somewhat appealing. It’s a throwback vibe. Sure, they cut ties with Cassidy, but they recognize his talent and likely don’t want him coaching a divisional rival like Edmonton, a team they’ve faced in the playoffs twice in the past four years.
Is it proper decorum? Probably not, but hey, not everything in sports is about politeness. Plus, you know, we all enjoy a cold beer in the shower from time to time.
This situation is a bit awkward for Edmonton, which thankfully still has head coach Kris Knoblauch, even after their first-round playoff exit.
It’s likely that more coaching positions will open up soon, especially with Toronto having a new GM, suggesting some changes might be in store. So, we’ll see how this all plays out.
One thing’s for sure, though: Cassidy will likely find himself back on an NHL bench come fall.
It feels as if Las Vegas is going out of its way to avoid being in Edmonton’s shoes.
