Trump’s Immigration Approval Plummets
Recent findings show that Trump’s approval rating for immigration policy has dipped to 41%. This comes from a two-day opinion poll conducted by Reuters/Ipsos.
About half of those surveyed expressed disapproval of the president’s primary immigration strategies, particularly his efforts to enforce strict measures. The White House has not yet responded to these developments.
On Thursday, protests against Trump’s immigration policies—including deportation initiatives and workplace raids spearheaded by Customs Enforcement (ICE)—are set to unfold across the nation.
The sentiment regarding the treatment of immigrants by the Trump administration appears to have worsened since demonstrations in Los Angeles last month, which coincided with an uptick in ICE activities in California, according to the latest survey.
Interestingly, over half of respondents in a similar poll from February had approved of Trump’s handling of immigration, marking a high point for his second term. However, as the administration has adopted more aggressive tactics to detain and deport immigrants, that approval has notably declined.
Another recent survey from the AP-NORC Research Center echoed the Reuters findings, indicating decreased support for Trump’s immigration stance.
Immigration has consistently ranked among the pressing issues since his return to the Oval Office in January. The White House reported that ICE had arrested 100,000 individuals in the first six months of this year.
The two-day poll also suggested that some of the administration’s methods could be triggering negative reactions. Less than a third of respondents favored carrying out ICE arrests in workplaces. Opinions among Republicans were split—56% supported workplace raids, while 24% opposed them and about 20% were uncertain.
In stark contrast, a significant 82% of Democrats voiced opposition to workplace arrests, as indicated by the survey.
Most participants were against treating ICE arrests “like military operations,” with 42% expressing dislike for ICE officers donning masks.
However, another poll from Harvard Cap/Harris released Monday revealed that Trump scored well in other areas, with around 60% of voters supporting his border security initiatives. Additionally, 75% backed efforts to deport criminals living illegally in the country.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll included responses from 1,027 U.S. adults between July 15 and 16, with a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
