California’s Democratic Senators Reject Immigrant Detention Facilities
California’s Democratic state senators have turned down the idea of immigrant detention centers, labeling them “prison gulags,” especially for those with severe convictions such as murder, rape, and pedophilia.
Senator Scott Wiener expressed concern about the current administration, stating, “Trump is building a fascist police state,” and criticized Congress for enabling a significant budget increase for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He noted plans to create more private detention facilities, referencing the infamous “Crocodile Alcatraz” in El Salvador. There are also rumors about Attorney General Pam Bondy possibly reviving Alcatraz prison near San Francisco.
Wiener described the idea of reopening Alcatraz as “absurd on so many levels,” adding that it would negatively impact local tourist attractions. He voiced worries about the potential transformation of Alcatraz into a facility for political prisoners, declaring, “I’m very worried about Trump actually trying to turn Alcatraz into a gulag.” He urged collective action against what he termed a dangerous idea.
Yet, there seems to be a disconnect in understanding what these detention centers truly involve. Most individuals apprehended by ICE have either been charged with crimes or have previous convictions. Interestingly, the Department of Homeland Security classifies “non-criminals,” supposedly devoid of any criminal history in the U.S., including some who may be involved in serious offenses like terrorism or gang violence.
Recently, Homeland Security Deputy Director Tricia McLaughlin revealed that authorities apprehended around 600 known or suspected terrorists and arrested 2,700 gang members from Tren de Aragua, a notorious group involved in violent crimes.
She pointed out that the politicians in power seem to be protecting these individuals. McLaughlin noted that detainees aren’t necessarily kept in these facilities, prompting the necessity for law enforcement to actively remove violent offenders from neighborhoods.
As previously reported, Alcatraz—often disparaged by Wiener—has been linked to the detention of some of the most dangerous illegal immigrants. For instance, one detainee, an MS-13 member named Oscar “Satan” Sanchez, has a history involving assault and conspiracy to commit murder. Another detainee, Luis Danube Colado from Guatemala, faces charges related to illegal entry and other crimes. Additionally, Eddie Lopez Gemott, a Cuban immigrant, has a record for arson and horrific assaults against vulnerable individuals.
However, the media continues to defend such individuals. There are allegations that those detained, like illegal immigrant pedophiles recently arrested in Minneapolis, are victims of a “cultural misconception.” This ongoing discourse raises questions about the realities of crime and immigration in America.
