Mournful Procession for Young Flood Victim in Texas
On Wednesday evening, the atmosphere in Bellville, Texas, was somber as residents gathered along the streets for the funeral of 8-year-old Virginia Hollis, who tragically lost her life in a flood at Camp Mystic on July 4th. The sight of her horses following the hearse was particularly poignant, evoking deep emotions among the mourners.
Among those grieving was a horse named Salt Valley, equipped with an empty saddle, symbolizing Hollis’s connection to her beloved animals. Friends described Hollis as a spirited young cowgirl who adored rodeos and horseback riding, proudly following in the footsteps of family tradition.
Her father recalled, “She loved covering Salt Valley. She was a saddle bronk rider like her granddad, who would always boast about it.” It’s evident that her spirit reached far beyond Bellville. In the aftermath of the flood, remains were discovered along the Guadalupe River, prompting families who knew nothing of Hollis to express their condolences and support.
Nadine, a resident from Houston, shared her heartbreak, stating, “I felt I needed to be here for her parents and friends.” Another Houston local, Diane, reflected on the unimaginable pain the family must be experiencing, saying, “I can’t even fathom what they’re going through right now.”
To honor Virginia, friends and family established a GoFundMe page, celebrating her as a “pure and fun soul that lit up every room” she entered. The fundraiser aims to support a memorial for the girl who loved doing many things—from gardening and playing the piano to painting, showcasing her adventurous spirit.
Brought into the world on March 23, 2017, Hollis was a vibrant child who cherished nature and took care of her younger sister, Siena. The heartfelt GoFundMe page continued, “Virginia was kind, had a contagious smile, and was raised in a lineage of strong Texas women.” The funds collected are intended for a memorial in her honor, ensuring her adventurous spirit continues to shine through those she left behind.
