McCarthy Criticizes Democrats Over Epstein Investigations
In a recent interview, former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif) accused Democrats of failing to address the Jeffrey Epstein situation while they were in charge during the Biden administration. He claimed that they “never asked about it” and attempted to distance themselves from the matter.
McCarthy stated, “They tried to hide from it,” during his appearance on Fox News’ Jesse Watters Primetime. He also pointed out that former President Trump had authorities look into the matter, emphasizing that Trump wasn’t hiding from it.
After being removed from his leadership role in 2023 and subsequently retiring from Congress, McCarthy defended the Trump administration’s approach to the federal investigations involving Epstein.
The administration has faced criticism from both Democrats and Trump’s base, particularly since the Justice Department and the FBI released a memo stating that Epstein did not maintain a “client list.” This contradicted earlier claims made by Attorney General Pam Bondy, who called for more transparency.
According to a report from Wall Street Journal, Trump supposedly wrote a provocative birthday note to Epstein in 2003, prior to the allegations of sex trafficking emerging against him. Trump’s camp denied further commentary and indicated intentions to pursue legal action against the publication for their reporting.
Despite Trump’s attempts to move past this issue, it continues to grow in significance. Representative Jamie Raskin (D-MD) insisted during an MSNBC segment that full disclosure of all relevant files is necessary, with only the identities of minor victims needing to be redacted. He noted a widespread, bipartisan demand for this information from Congress.
On Friday, Trump echoed McCarthy’s sentiments, questioning why Democrats didn’t release more documents when they had control over both the Senate and the White House. He stated, “If Epstein had a ‘smoking gun,’ why hold onto the files for four years?” referring to former Attorney General Merrick Garland and ex-prosecutor Maureen Comey. “Because they had nothing!!!”
These comments follow Trump’s intervention directing Bondi to disclose relevant testimony from the grand jury related to ongoing lawsuits. In response, Bondi indicated that she would seek permission from the federal court to release this information.
